News Page February 2002: News from the St. Thomas world, and page updates in February 2002. Click here for latest news.
February 28th 2002 - The biography has had a big make-over. It should now feature most of the information you would ever want to know about St. Thomas plus some funny tidbits you would probably have been better off without. I got most of the information used for the page directly from Thomas when I met him on the 16th. If there are any mistakes, then I did not realize that Thomas was joking about something. There have also been some updates to the concert chronology, articles and the discography sections. On the 27th, the Norwegian newspaper VG put up an article about St. Thomas' concert at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow, Scotland on the 24th. The article can be read here. On the same day, the Norwegian Internet newsportal Nettavisen also put up an interesting article, about Lambchop, where they thank St. Thomas for their success in Norway. The article can be read here. February 22nd 2002 - Last Saturday, on the 16th, Thomas was kind enough sit down with me to answer the boring and repetituous questions I had regarding his musical life. The meeting took place at an extremely smoky café close to Thomas' Berlin home, and ended up lasting more than two hours. The material will be used for the biography and wherever else it might be deemed fit, as soon as I have time to type it up. Thanks a lot to Thomas for taking his time, when we said goodbye afterwards I actually forgot to tell him that... St. Thomas will be part of a Lee Hazlewood tribute album to be released by City Slang some time in the near future. The band recorded their cover last Tuesday, on the 19th. Last Saturday, Thomas had yet to decide which song he would want to cover. Other artists taking part in the project are Madrugada, Lambchop, Erlend Øye from Kings Of Convenience, Evan Dando from Lemonheads and St. Etienne. Thanks to Thomas for this information. If you are lucky, you might see a video for "Take A Dance With Me" on your television in the near future. The song has been released as a radio and television single, but it will not be available for actual sale. The video cost twenty times as much to make as the last video, for "Cornerman," which starred Thomas' record label boss and had a budget of only 5.000 Norwegian kroner. In "Take A Dance With Me," Thomas acts as a taxi driver. Thomas will take part in a netmeeting at the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet on March 1st. Readers of the online version of the paper get the chance to send in whatever question they want to a selected famous person, and the person then sits down and answer some of the submitted questions. You can click here to go to the page for the meeting, or here to go directly to the question submittal form. Dagbladet also have a St. Thomas competition which you can take part in here. All pages are in Norwegian, but I am pretty sure that Thomas will understand questions submitted in English, as long as the submitters understand where to put their question on the form. The meeting is scheduled to take place at 13:00 on Friday March 1st. The prize in the competition is tickets for the St. Thomas concert at Rockefeller in Oslo the same day. The concert on March 21st that was scheduled to take place at Roter Salon in Berlin, Germany has been moved to Bastard. The Roter Salon is part of the Volksbühne, and the change of venue is due to an incident after the band's concert there on January 18th. The venue on March 7th has been confirmed as Kick in Egersund, Norway. Which is my hometown, and therefore good news. If you want to discuss St. Thomas, you can do so in the discussion forum. The forum is actually a Madrugada forum, but as I also run the Madrugada page the forum is for and the forum itself, I took the liberty of adding a St. Thomas section to it. Feel free to post anything you want to there, but make sure to put the St. Thomas-related stuff in the St. Thomas section. February 12th 2002 - Added some more articles to the articles page. One of them is a rather interesting article published by the Norwegian music resource Ballada yesterday, which is mainly about St. Thomas' tour with Lambchop. St. Thomas will be upport band for Lambchop for seven weeks, starting April 4th in Portugal. Thomas will have to pick two people from his regular four-piece backing-band to go with him, as a whole band added to Lambchop's seven-musician lineup would be too chaotic on a hectic tour. In total, St. Thomas will be playing close to seventy concerts from February 22nd until May 18th, and an American tour is planned for August and September. Hectic? "No, this is not too much stress for me. This is just incredibly fun," Thomas is quoted. The original publicification is here. The American label Misra Records have not only been licensed to release "I'm Coming Home," St. Thomas' first album, "Mysterious Walks," is also planned for release in America on April 1st. February 11th 2002 - Lots of information has been added to the discography, and there have been some additions to the concert chronology. Thanks a lot to Jan Saghaug and Stian Hole for submitting the information. Apparently, a St. Thomas track is featured on the free CD that comes with the new issue of the English music magazine Uncut. February 9th 2002 - Last Wednesday, on the 6th, St. Thomas performed five songs live on the program Club Lek on the Dutch radio channel VPRO. The songs performed were "Invitation," "I'm Coming Home #2", "Strangers Out Of Blue," "The Cool Song" and a new song that was not introduced by name. Thomas performed without his band, but earlier in the day he had met his new tour manager for the first time, and persuaded him into playing drums at the radio show. The drummer, not even having heard some of the songs, did a good job. The whole performance, plus an interview with Thomas, can be found on VPRO's 3VOOR12 page as audio-on-demand, you can click here to go the main page of the Club Lek February 6th broadcast. On that page you find links to three St. Thomas pictures, an audio-on-demand of interview with Thomas plus his live performance by clicking the link to the stream of UUR 2, and a video-on-demand of "I'm Coming Home #2". Thanks to Marc Verhees for the information. I have also put up direct links to the streams, you can click here for the interview and the performance, the St. Thomas parts start at 19:46 and last until 49:40, or here for the video of "I'm Coming Home #2". For all the streams you will need the free RealPlayer installed. A decent Internet connection is also recommended, or there will be skips during the stream. February 6th 2002 - The Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet put up an interesting article about St. Thomas on their Internet page today, which can be read here. It says that St. Thomas will be the support act on Lambchop's forthcoming tour, including a performance at Royal Albert Hall in London, England on May 7th. This, and some changes to the Norwegian leg of the band's own European tour has been added to the concert chronology section. According to Dagbladet, St. Thomas will play at Studentersamfunnet, Trondheim on March 2nd; the 3rd is unconfirmed though City Slang lists it as Blæst, Trondheim; the 7th has been changed from unknown venue at Bryne to Kick, Egersund; the 9th has been changed from Luftslottet, Grimstad to Paviljongen, Notodden. Again, this is according to the newspaper, the dates and venues may very well be incorrect or get changed in the future. Quite a lot of German magazines have published reviews of the "I'm Coming Home" album, some of these reviews are available in the articles page. They are all in the original language, like the Norwegian articles, as it would take too long to translate everything. The Norwegian newspaper VG recently published an article about St. Thomas concerning newspapers and music magazines in England who had reviewed and praised the "I'm Coming Home" album. I could not find many of the reviews online, but here are the resources that were listed: New Musical Express, The Observer, XFM / Rough Trade, MOJO - The Music Magazine, The Face, Time Out, Q Magazine, Daily Telegraph, The Mirror, The Guardian and The Independent. |
